How to Prepare a Sofa for Pickup Without Moving It Outside
A practical doorway, cushion, hardware, and access checklist for couch pickup day.

A good pickup starts with the item’s construction, the narrowest part of the route, and the access rules at the property. You should not need to carry bulky furniture outside before a planned in-home removal.
Start with the exit, not the sofa
Measure the narrowest doorway, the sofa’s widest fixed point, and any stair or hallway turn. Include trim, railings, and door hardware in the usable opening. A mover can plan around a tight turn only if the tight point is known before lifting starts.
Do not drag the sofa to the curb unless the pickup arrangement specifically calls for curbside collection. Leaving a bulky item outdoors can expose it to weather and can create an obstruction.
Remove what is meant to come off
Set aside loose cushions, throws, and slipcovers. Check whether the legs unscrew or unbolt, but do not force hidden fasteners or cut upholstery. Sleeper sofas and powered recliners have mechanisms that add weight and pinch points, so identify them when requesting an estimate.
Place removed hardware in a labeled bag. If the sofa is still usable, keeping its parts together helps preserve that option without promising a donation outcome.
Clear a working lane
Move small tables, lamps, rugs, pet gates, and wall decor away from the carry path. Give the crew room to rotate the sofa without striking trim or furniture that is staying.
For apartments, confirm elevator reservations, loading entrances, and parking instructions. Tell the provider about stairs, long corridors, or restricted loading hours before the arrival window.
